We go to the Serra de Monchique, where medronho’s production is a centuries-old tradition passed from generation to generation.
This popular drink is produced with the colorful berries of arbutus.
The process is divided into 3 phases:
- Picking (October-December)
- Fermentation (December – March / April)
- Distilling (March / April).
Come meet and participate in this process with a local producer whose family has been producing this drink for several generations.

You can choose between these experiences:
1 – Medronho’s picking
The Medronho picking begins in the fall when the berry begins to turn a red-orange color. This work starts early and is done in groups of family, friends and neighbors. The berries are picked one by one, without leaves. In this experiment, you will follow the producer to the medronhal and reap the berries for the production of medronho. At the end there will be medronho and melosa tasting and a local cake.
Season: Autumn (October, November) – Season may vary depending on rainfall / other factors.
2 – The Distill
After fermentation, the distillation phase begins. The fermented medronho will be distilled in a copper alembic still. In this experiment the entire distillation process will be explained.
Season: Spring (March / April) – Season may vary.
